New Zealand Tramways and Public Passenger Transport Employees Union v Tranzurban Hutt Valley Limited

A union representing bus drivers and their employer disagreed over whether a split shift, where a driver works a period in the morning and another in the afternoon with an unrostered gap between, is one work period or two for rest and meal break entitlements. The Authority held it was one; the Employment Court allowed the employer's challenge and held that was incorrect; the Court of Appeal dismissed the union's appeal and answered the question of law in the negative; and the Supreme Court declined leave.
